The combined kitchen and family room,
th is p a g e ,
is the hub of daily life. “We start
the day in here planning lunches and end
up here for homework and casual meals,”
Nancy says. Designer Sasha Emerson chose
sage green, khaki, and hits of soft
turquoise (behind the bookshelves and on
the sofa) to echo the backyard views and
to withstand wear and tear in this all-
purpose space. “We knew that whatever
happened in there had to relate to the
outside, because there are windows all
over the room,” she says. The family often
pushes open the doors in the adjacent
dining room,
o p p o s ite ,
to entertain friends
on the back patio. The room’s pale gray-
painted walls are a cool counterpoint to
the dark-stained furniture in a “sophisticated
but not heavy” way, Radon says. “The walls
have a bit of luminosity to them that
makes the room very elegant”
